Treating for brown recluse spiders is much different than treating for many other insects or spiders. If your home has a substantial recluse population they are likely primarily populated in the attic and wall void areas. While this may sound like that's a good place for them as long as they stay there, they problem is that they don't just stay there.

Traditional treatments used for most other insects, while occasionally producing some dead recluse spiders, are not especially effective in substantially reducing the population of this elusive spider.

Here's why:

Since the recluse spiders are primarily in these hidden voids in the walls and attic, most of them are not coming into contact with the products applied to surface areas. This means for every few that are killed on surface areas, many more are being hatched in these protected areas.(Each female normally produces between 100-250 spiderlings per year) The end result is that, using traditional methods, you can't kill a substantial percentage of the population, and the spiders win.

Here's how we approach this issue:

First, We place several insect monitors around the walls on the inside of your home, generally about every 6 to 8 feet, but also in closets, under furniture, etc.

Second, We remove the covers from electric recepticles and light switches, inject an insecticide dust into these areas, and replace the covers. This dust is also applied to areas behind loose baseboards and trim where possible.

Third, We use a flushing agent under and behind furniture to help flush spiders into traps.

Forth, We apply a dessicant dust to the attic area using a power duster. This will distribute throughout the attic area, creeping into small void spaces and some cracks and crevices.

Now the spiders' primary resting and breeding areas have been comprimised. While there are still areas that the spider can reside in the walls and under the insulation, etc. that have not been directly treated with the dessicant dust, the mobility of the spider and it's ability to hunt it's prey are severly limited. If it moves very far in any direction it will come into contact with the dessicant dust, which will dehydrate the spider.

While we cannot guarantee you elimination of these spiders, the level of population reduction typically achieved will no doubt be of great benefit.
